Blackpool Swoop For Former Sheffield Wednesday Stalwart

Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Michael Ihiekwe is on the verge of sealing a move to League One side Blackpool.

The experienced centre-back is expected to join up with Steve Bruce at Bloomfield Road after leaving Hillsborough this summer.

Promotion Hero Ihiekwe Set for League One Return

Ihiekwe, 31, played his final match for the Owls in the final-day draw with Watford and was subsequently released by the club after three seasons of service. During his time at Hillsborough, the former Rotherham United defender made 82 appearances across all competitions and was a key figure in both their dramatic 2023 League One promotion and subsequent survival in the Championship.

Now a free agent, Ihiekwe is closing in on a switch to Blackpool, managed by veteran Bruce. The Tangerines have moved swiftly to land the centre-back ahead of rival interest from other League One sides.

His time at Hillsborough will be fondly remembered by fans and teammates alike. A calming influence at the back, Ihiekwe formed part of a solid defensive core that contributed significantly to the club’s revival under both Darren Moore and Danny Röhl.

Michael Ihiekwe Career

Ihiekwe came through Liverpool’s academy before forging a senior career that included successful spells at Tranmere Rovers and Rotherham United, where he made over 160 appearances and won two promotions.

He established himself at Tranmere, making over 130 appearances and impressing in the National League. Ihiekwe then joined Rotherham United, where he became a key figure across five seasons, helping the club to two League One promotions and an EFL Trophy win. His performances earned him two PFA Team of the Year selections.

After leaving Rotherham, he signed for Sheffield Wednesday in 2022, gaining promotion again via the play-offs in his first season. Despite injuries and limited opportunities under different managers, he proved vital in their successful battle against relegation in 2024–25, earning Player of the Month honours before being released. In total, he made over 400 senior appearances.

Known for his strength, aerial ability, and leadership, Ihiekwe has also been capped by England C and is of Nigerian descent.

Writer’s View

Michael Ihiekwe’s expected move to Blackpool looks like a win for all parties. He’s a proven League One performer with recent experience in the Championship and a strong record in promotion battles. For Steve Bruce, it’s a sensible, low-risk addition to a squad that needs structure and experience.

From Ihiekwe’s perspective, it’s a chance to join a club with upward ambition. While Wednesday fans will be sad to see him go, the move is a natural step for a defender who still has plenty to offer at this level.
