Wrexham are reportedly interested in making a move for free agent Danny Ward as the summer window opens.
The Red Dragons, who gained automatic promotion behind Birmingham City in League One, are in the market for goalkeepers following Mark Howard’s decision to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month. As it stands, the club have Arthur Onkonkwo, Callum Burton and Luke McNicholas at their disposal next season.
Wrexham Look At Former Stopper
According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, Wrexham have identified Ward as a potential option. Leicester City released the Welsh international following this season’s relegation from the Premier League after only making five appearances, characterised by high-profile mistakes. Ward dropped behind Mads Hermansen and Jakub Stolarczyk in the pecking order for Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
Ward has plenty of EFL experience, with his finest hour coming for Huddersfield Town, where he saved decisive penalties against Reading to send the Terriers into the top flight. He has also played for Morecambe, whom he joined on loan from Liverpool. He was part of the Wales squad that reached the semi-finals of EURO 2016 and has 44 appearances for his nation.
Ward began his time in football at his local club in Wrexham, and spent five years at the club before Liverpool signed him as a youth prospect for £100,000 in 2012. He was bought by Leicester in 2018 but only recorded 29 appearances for The Foxes, being the back up for both Kasper Schmiechel and Hermansen.

Writers’ View
Ward would be an experienced signing for Wrexham, matching the status someone like Mark Howard had with the side. It is, however, unlikely he will be the first choice for Phil Parkinson’s side with how consistent Arthur Okonkwo has been for the past two seasons. But with his Championship experience and the fact that it is a free transfer, should he join, it is a very shrewd and solid move to provide cover.
