‘Frustrated’ Plymouth Argyle Recieve Hammer Blow As Manager Departs

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed that head coach Miron Muslić has left the club after just four months to pursue a return to football in Germany

The 41-year-old has entered talks with an unnamed 2. Bundesliga side, citing family reasons for his decision not to continue in English football.

Muslić Departs Argyle Despite Verbal Commitment To Promotion Push

Muslić, who joined the club in January on a three-and-a-half-year deal, reportedly gave repeated verbal promises that he would lead the Greens’ bid for a swift return to the Championship following their relegation to League One. However, Argyle have now “reluctantly allowed” him to speak with a German club, citing his desire to be nearer to his family after four years working abroad.

“We are frustrated by this decision… having implemented clear structures, processes and personnel to aid Miron and his coaching staff as we look to return to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity,” the club said in a statement.

Surprise decision

The news comes as a surprise to many at Home Park. Argyle had moved quickly in the early summer transfer market and were working closely with Muslić on pre-season planning. The club’s leadership have confirmed they will be making no further comment at this stage.

Muslić leaves with a mixed legacy. Although results in the Championship were underwhelming, he made headlines by masterminding a memorable 1–0 FA Cup victory over Premier League leaders Liverpool in February—a result that marked just the fourth time a top-flight leader has been knocked out of the competition by a lower-league side.

Before his brief spell at Argyle, Muslić enjoyed a successful stint in Belgium with Cercle Brugge, guiding them to European qualification in 2023–24. His coaching journey also includes spells with SV Ried in Austria and Floridsdorfer AC, and he initially rose through the ranks in youth and assistant roles.

Now, Plymouth are once again searching for a new leader to guide them into the 2025/26 League One season, with the club eager to build on the structural groundwork laid in recent months.

Writer’s View

This is a major blow for Plymouth Argyle. Having invested in long-term planning around Muslić’s tenure, the timing and nature of his departure will sting—especially given the verbal assurances of his commitment. While personal circumstances can’t be dismissed, it leaves the club scrambling once more at a critical point in their rebuild. The next appointment will be crucial.

Argyle have the infrastructure and ambition to challenge for promotion, but they now need a head coach who can match that vision—and stick around to see it through.
