West Brom Plan Move For Ex-Premier League Manager

West Bromwich Albion are preparing to approach Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur to speak with first-team coach Ryan Mason about their vacant managerial position.

The Baggies have been searching for a new manager since April 21, when former manager Tony Mowbray departed the club.

With Spurs’ campaign only just coming to an end after the Europa League final win in Bilbao, alongside the fact that Ange Postecoglou’s future at the club is still in doubt, despite the trophy, after a horrendous Premier League campaign, it means there are doubts surrounding Mason’s future at Tottenham for two reasons.

After two previous caretaker stints in the Premier League over seven years at Spurs, the 33-year-old was also thought to hold talks with Belgian side Anderlecht last October; however, Mason stayed put in London, overseeing Tottenham’s lifting of their first trophy in 17 years.

The Englisman came through the academy at Spurs, playing for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Millwall and Swindon Town before being forced to retire at 26 due to him sustaining a fractured skull in his time at Hull City.

West Bromwich Albion Still Searching

Mowbray took charge at the Hawthorns for the second time after Carlos Corberan departed the club to take up a vacant managerial role at La Liga side Valencia.

However, unlike his first stint at the club, where he won promotion to the Premier League, it didn’t go to plan, with the Baggies parting ways with Mowbray after their hopes of play-off football had dwindled back in late April.

A month later, West Brom still haven’t hired a new manager to take charge, as they, alongside many other clubs, are looking to prepare for the 2025/26 season.

Whilst the club may have been waiting for Mason’s campaign at Spurs to come to a close after the Europa League final, it’s fair to say that the club would like to hire a manager sooner rather than later.

Writer’s View

Although it’s been over a month since the Baggies have had a manager, it’s clear they’ve been waiting for Mason’s season to finish before approaching Spurs. However, ideally, West Brom will want him hired as soon as possible, so that everything else behind the scenes, like transfers, can be done in good time.

With other Championship clubs starting to do transfer business, alongside the fact that next season’s second tier is looking very strong, the worry is that the Albion are going to leave it too late in the market, and then subsequently struggle and not do as well as they’d be hoping for next season. They need to get this deal over the line quickly.
