Sunderland Linked With Duo Swoop After Wembley Win

Sunderland’s return to the Premier League is barely a week old, but plans for the top flight are already taking shape.

Among the early storylines dominating Wearside are two potential returns that would delight supporters: Ajax captain Jordan Henderson and Manchester United winger Amad Diallo.

Henderson, 33, was a surprise visitor at Wembley for the play-off final win over Sheffield United and has since been the subject of mounting speculation. The former Sunderland academy graduate is understood to be assessing his options after captaining Ajax to Champions League qualification in a turbulent season. The Dutch club are reportedly open to letting him leave, particularly following the recent departure of head coach Francesco Farioli, who had hoped to retain the veteran midfielder.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Henderson is expected to make a decision on his future this month, with interest emerging from both the Premier League and Serie A. While Sunderland are thought to be among the clubs keen to bring him home, Rangers have also been linked with a move for the experienced England international.

Diallo Also Linked, But Deal May Prove Tricky

Another player attracting attention from the Stadium of Light hierarchy is Amad Diallo. The Ivorian winger starred for Sunderland during the 2022/23 campaign, notching 14 goals in all competitions and becoming a fan favourite for his flair and cutting edge in the final third.

Reports from 225foot.com suggest Sunderland would be keen to re-sign the 21-year-old, but any move would come with complications. Diallo recently penned a new long-term deal at Old Trafford, keeping him with Manchester United until 2030. That, coupled with his strong end-of-season form, has significantly increased his value.

While a permanent transfer now appears unlikely due to financial constraints, Sunderland could explore the possibility of a second loan later in the window. However, much will depend on United’s plans for the winger and whether he’s included in their Premier League squad for the upcoming campaign.

Writer’s View

Sunderland’s return to the Premier League has naturally sparked talk of marquee moves, but the pursuit of Jordan Henderson and Amad Diallo is rooted in far more than nostalgia. Henderson would bring invaluable experience and leadership to a youthful dressing room—qualities that will be vital as the club navigates the challenges of top-flight football.

His emotional ties to the club are well documented, but a move will depend on wage demands and how serious other suitors, like Rangers, become. For Henderson, the pull of a final Premier League chapter at his boyhood club could be strong.

As for Diallo, the appetite for a return is clear on both sides, but Sunderland may need to be patient. United are unlikely to sell unless a big offer is made, and even a loan could depend on pre-season performances and squad depth. But if the opportunity arises, Diallo’s return could inject real quality into Sunderland’s attack.
