‘Threat To The Future of The Club’ – Hartlepool United Figure Steps Down

Jeff Stelling has stepped down as Hartlepool United’s honorary president in protest at owner Raj Singh’s handling of the club’s prolonged takeover saga.

The broadcasting legend announced his resignation in a public statement, citing an “intolerable position” for supporters amid continued uncertainty off the field.

Stelling Steps Away Amid Frustration Over Ownership Limbo

Stelling, who has served as honorary president for almost a decade, made his decision following Hartlepool’s announcement that they remain behind schedule in preparing for next season due to delays in finalising a takeover. The club confirmed a prospective buyer had failed to meet deadlines to provide proof of funds, leaving the National League side in a precarious state.

Singh initially put the club up for sale in April 2023 after relegation from League Two. He formally resigned as chairman in March 2025, citing personal abuse from sections of the fanbase. Despite this, he has continued to fund operational costs, including player wages, and has now proposed a poll for season ticket holders to decide whether he should resume control.

That proposal drew sharp criticism from Stelling, who accused Singh of hypocrisy and a lack of transparency:

“Supporters have been left in an intolerable position with a perceived threat to the future of the club should they not support the current owner,” he said. “Let’s remember it was him who wanted to stop funding the club. Yet now he seems almost affronted that others want to take over.”

Stelling, also a minority shareholder, stated he had not been consulted on the takeover process and had not met the interested buyers, but expressed faith in their intentions.

Critical Juncture As Planning Falls Behind

In a strongly-worded club statement, Hartlepool acknowledged that planning for 2025–26 is significantly behind schedule, warning that the delay could “ultimately threaten its very existence.” The retained list deadline is looming, yet player recruitment and operational planning remain on hold.

The board said that while Singh has floated the idea of stepping in to assist again, he has made no formal commitment, instead leaving the decision to fans via a proposed vote.

Writer’s View

Jeff Stelling’s resignation is symbolic, but it sends a powerful message. As one of Hartlepool’s most passionate and public champions, his decision reflects the growing unrest and disillusionment surrounding the club’s leadership.

While Raj Singh continues to cover costs, the absence of a clear succession plan is paralysing preparations at a time when clarity and ambition are vital. With prospective buyers failing to meet funding obligations and the current owner unwilling to commit without fan approval, Hartlepool risk drifting into a crisis that could take years to recover from. The coming weeks will be critical — not only for boardroom control, but for the very direction of the club’s future.
