Barnet Sign National League Club Captain

Barnet FC have announced the signing of former FC Halifax Town captain Adam Senior, as per the club’s official website. Senior becomes the second defender to make the move from The Shay to The Hive this summer, following Ryan Galvin’s arrival on May 22.

Senior’s Career Path

The right-footed defender started his career at Bolton Wanderers during the most tumultuous period in the club’s history.

He was thrust into first-team action aged just 18 due to the Wanderers’ financial problems, playing four times in the 2019/20 season before returning to youth football the following year after Bolton had solved their off-the-pitch issues.

The Englishman began to regain momentum in the 2021/22 campaign, going out on short-term loans to Ashton United, York City and Chorley whilst also making a couple of league starts for his parent club.

The youngster started the 2022/23 season on another loan in the National League North with Telford United, but he was recalled and sent to the National League with Halifax Town in January 2023.

Senior impressed in his initial loan stint with the Shaymen and they signed him on a permanent deal in the summer after he was released by Bolton.

He went on to make 96 more appearances for the Yorkshire-based club, scoring 10 goals during that time.

What Type Of Player Is Senior?

Senior is a predominantly right-footed defender who is capable of playing at both right-back and centre-back.

He is not only an excellent defender, but he also has good technical ability. Playing out from the back and diagonal passes were two areas which he highlighted in his first interview as a Bees player.

Last season, he was one of a small group of players who played every minute in the National League, demonstrating his tremendous fitness and availability. This could prove especially useful to the Bees as Myles Kenlock was the only defender to start over 35 games for them this season.

The Englishman also excels mentally. He was the captain of Halifax last season despite being just 23 years of age and he scored an important 83rd minute goal for the Shaymen against Braintree Town to secure their playoff berth.

Writer’s View

This is an incredibly impressive signing for the Bees. Senior has been one of the Shaymen’s best players for the last two seasons as they have been very successful in the fifth tier.

Upon hearing news of his departure, fans and pundits alike predicted a move to a top-level League Two club or potentially even League One. The fact that he has joined Barnet shows the ambition which Dean Brennan has.

He scored a very impressive five league goals last campaign, showing the threat he provides from set pieces and the confidence that he has in his ability.

There may be a slightly sour undertone to this singing for Bees fans. As two of their three signings so far have been central defenders, it may hint that one of, if not both, Danny Collinge and Adebola Oluwo could be set to depart imminently.

It has also been a difficult start to the summer for Chris Millington’s side, who may need to spend a season rebuilding after losing key players.
