Multiple unnamed Championship and other EFL clubs have registered their interest in ex-Sheffield Wednesday defender Pol Valentin.
The 28-year-old left Hillsborough this summer after the expiry of his contract, even though he had another one-year clause in his contract. This was however, not activated.
The Spaniard was one of six players who left Wednesday, whilst the likes of Michael Smith, Josh Windass and Anthony Musaba all had their one-year extensions activated.
According to The Star, there are multiple EFL clubs, as well as multiple Spanish clubs, who are interested in Valetin’s services, with two of these clubs reportedly being other rival Championship clubs.
He was brought to the club by former manager Xisco Munoz, joining from Spanish second tier side Sporting Gijon in 2023.
Since then, Valentin has racked up 77 appearances in all competitions for the Owls, 70 of which have come in the Championship. He was a part of the squad that pulled off the great escape under Danny Rohl the season before last season.
The 28-year-old has only started 13 games this season in the league, but has made 37 total appearances across all competitions in blue and white.
Whilst there are clubs who want to keep Valentin in England, there is also reported interest from his home country, with La Liga Hypermotion clubs interested in his services, according to Spanish journalist Angel Garcia. Valentin has made a total of 88 appearances in the second division in Spain for multiple clubs, and now has a decision to make about his future.
Writer’s View
Whilst Valentin hasn’t had the best season at Wednesday, mainly playing off the bench, it was still a shock to see the club release him, especially as they had an option to trigger a contract extension. Although he didn’t seem to be the starting right-back, he has still proven to be a more than capable addition off the bench.
The fact that multiple English and Spanish sides are interested implies he isn’t a bad player, and is a solid rotation option who could still improve in the years to come. It’ll be interesting to see what the Spaniard decides to do, and whether or not he stays in England, or moves back home.
