Semi Ajayi’s six-year stint with West Bromwich Albion has come to an end—but the former Nigeria international may not be leaving the Championship just yet, with clubs already queuing up for his signature.
The experienced defender was one of several senior players released by the Baggies this summer after an injury-hit campaign in which he struggled for regular minutes. Despite setbacks, Ajayi made 170 appearances for Albion after arriving from Rotherham United in 2019 for a reported fee of £1.5 million.
His time at The Hawthorns saw him play a key role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League and their 2020–21 top-flight campaign, but this season proved frustrating for the centre-back, who was limited by two separate injuries.
Agent revelation
Ajayi’s agent, Larry Oban, has revealed the player is already in discussions with prospective employers, with both League One and Championship sides expressing interest.
“He’s already in talks with Reading and Hull, who admire his versatility and experience,” Oban confirmed. “An assessment will take place in the coming weeks, but he’ll be there somewhere next season.”
That news could set up a reunion between Ajayi and his former side in 2025/26, should he sign for a Championship club. Hull City, who narrowly missed out on a play-off spot this term, are understood to be particularly keen, with their recruitment focused on experienced additions to strengthen their back line.
Meanwhile, Reading—despite currently operating in League One—are reportedly hoping to tempt Ajayi with the promise of a leadership role in their squad as they push for promotion. The Royals are looking to rebuild after off-field instability and view Ajayi’s experience in both the Championship and Premier League as a valuable asset.
Ajayi was one of three high-profile departures from The Hawthorns this summer, with John Swift and Grady Diangana also moving on as the club restructures ahead of appointing a new head coach. The retained list reflected a growing need to lower the average squad age and manage finances more tightly under new ownership expectations.

Writer’s View
Ajayi’s release marks the end of an important chapter at The Hawthorns, but it could prove a shrewd opportunity for a Championship rival. With over 300 senior appearances and international pedigree, the defender brings experience that many clubs at this level lack.
Hull’s reported interest makes a lot of sense—they’ll need added steel if they are to take the next step into play-off contention. Meanwhile, Reading’s involvement highlights the ambitions of a club refusing to settle in League One. Wherever he lands, Ajayi is unlikely to be short of options.
