Experienced goalkeeper Jay Lynch has signed a new two-year deal to keep him at Fleetwood Town until 2027.
The 32-year-old joined the Cods from Rochdale in the summer of 2022 and has made over 125 appearances since.
Lynch’s Career To Date
A product of the Bolton Wanderers youth setup, Lynch joined League Two side Accrington Stanley on a free transfer in September. However, after making just two appearances and after a month at Accrington, he joined Salford City, who played in the National League North at the time.
He spent three successful years at the Peninsula, playing just shy of 50 games in all competitions, before moving to National League outfit AFC Fylde in 2017.
At Fydle, he made 88 appearances in just two seasons, before moving back to Manchester to join then League One club Rochdale, where he played 63 times in both the third and the fourth tier after suffering relegation.
A move to Fleetwood followed, where he has spent the previous three years, and after making 32 starts due to David Harrington’s injury, he has been rewarded with a new two-year deal.
Building a Strong Core
With this window being manager Pete Wild’s first full summer window at the club after joining in December 2024, there’s no doubt he’ll want to bring in his own players to add to the squad. However, it would be unrealistic to presume that Fleetwood have a massive budget after a midtable, 14th-placed finish.
Lynch is the fifth player to sign a new deal at the club, which signals the club’s intent to keep the core of the squad from the last campaign. Players Phoenix Patterson, Ronan Coughlan, Finley Potter and Ryan Graydon have all triggered appearance clauses, which triggered 12-month extensions.
On top of this, the Cods only released three players: Danny Mayor, Ryan Broom, and Callum Dolan and remain in talks with centre-back Harrison Holgate.
On signing the new two-year deal, Lynch stated:
“I feel at home here. The backing from the gaffer, the staff, and the supporters has been brilliant, and I’m determined to repay that faith over the next two seasons.”
Writer’s View
Rewarding the 32-year-old with a new deal makes perfect sense for both parties. Whilst Lynch hasn’t been the starting name on the team sheet for the majority of this season, since Harrington’s injury, he has really stepped up, playing 27 league games, registering one assist in the process.
It’s clear that Fleetwood want to keep the core of their squad for next season, with Wild believing the majority of his squad are good enough to push on into next season. A few signings, and the Cods will be looking good for next season.
