Rotherham United Admit Defeat In 27-Year-Old’s Contract Situation

Rotherham United have suffered a setback in their rebuilding plans after Hakeem Odoffin informed the club he will not be signing a new contract.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Hamilton Academical in 2021, has made over 100 appearances in all competitions, operating across midfield and defence. He was offered a new deal by the club but has now decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Key Role

Odoffin played a key role in Rotherham’s 2022–23 promotion campaign and also scored the goal that confirmed their place in League One. His departure is a blow to new manager Matt Hamshaw, who is preparing for a crucial summer after a disappointing 2024–25 season.

Hamshaw praised Odoffin’s professionalism and commitment, both on and off the field:

“We’re really disappointed that Haks sees his future away from Rotherham United, but we also understand it for all the reasons he has detailed in the many discussions we’ve had about his future. A player of his talents will understandably have enticing offers elsewhere and his performances have been so good for a long time now that we absolutely don’t begrudge him that.

The Millers boss also acknowledged the midfielder’s role as an ambassador within the local community, adding:

“He has been first class for this football club both as a player and an ambassador in the community. I am 100 per cent confident that you won’t find anybody who has encountered him throughout the last four years that says otherwise.”

Odoffin’s early decision to inform the club of his intentions has been welcomed by the coaching staff, allowing the recruitment team to shift focus onto potential replacements.

“We’re grateful too that he has informed us of his decision early and been honest and transparent with us throughout the process. The ruthless world of football means we now have to focus our attentions on the next target,” Hamshaw added.

Odoffin leaves the New York Stadium having earned praise for his versatility, professionalism, and connection with supporters. His departure is the latest in a summer that is expected to see significant changes, with Rotherham already releasing three senior players and in discussions with others over their futures.

Writer’s View

Losing Hakeem Odoffin is a major blow to Rotherham United. He has been more than just a reliable performer on the pitch—his leadership, community presence, and adaptability made him one of the club’s most valued figures.

While Matt Hamshaw and his recruitment team will be relieved to have early clarity, replacing a player of Odoffin’s calibre won’t be easy. With rebuilding already underway after a frustrating League One season, this exit raises the stakes for the club’s summer transfer activity.
