Queens Park Rangers have stepped up their interest in former Lyon manager Pierre Sage as they search for a new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The Championship club are understood to have travelled to France for face-to-face talks with the highly regarded tactician.
QPR Move Early in Pursuit of French Coach Sage
According to L’Équipe, Sage has emerged as a managerial target for the Loftus Road outfit, alongside fellow Championship sides Leicester City and Southampton. The 45-year-old is currently weighing up his options after departing Olympique Lyonnais in January 2025 following a short but impactful tenure.
Despite his dismissal midway through the Ligue 1 season, Sage’s stock remains high. He guided Lyon to a UEFA Europa League qualification spot during the 2023/24 campaign after stepping in as interim boss following the sacking of Fabio Grosso. His performance earned him a contract extension through to 2026—though results in early 2025 led to an early termination.
QPR are not alone in their admiration. The Frenchman is being heavily linked with the vacant RC Lens position following Will Still’s exit, and is also thought to be on the radar at Nantes should Antoine Kombouaré leave. Other Ligue 1 sides including Rennes, Montpellier, Reims, and Toulouse have also expressed interest.
However, it is QPR’s proactive approach that stands out. Representatives from Loftus Road are believed to have visited Sage in France to present their vision, in what is viewed as a serious move to secure his services ahead of the summer.
Sage’s managerial journey began after a modest playing career at amateur level. He held roles at clubs including Châteauroux, Sedan, Lyon-Duchère and Red Star, before taking over Lyon’s youth academy in 2023. His rapid rise to the senior post came later that year, and his Europa League qualification achievement impressed observers across Europe.
QPR are seeking a long-term replacement following a period of instability in the dugout. The west London club avoided relegation last season but are aiming for greater consistency, and Sage’s tactical acumen and player development credentials are seen as key assets.
