Carlisle United have confirmed that Mark Hughes will continue as head coach, after the 40-year-old impressed during a short but effective stint at the helm.
Hughes arrived at Brunton Park in early February and quickly won over both players and fans with his calm leadership and revitalising presence. Under his guidance, the Cumbrians produced a late-season resurgence that saw them lose just once at home and record three straight wins for the first time in more than two years.
Hughes Stays On As Carlisle Eye League Return
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Hughes expressed his gratitude and determination to continue building momentum:
“I’m thrilled to be staying at the club. Since joining back in February, the support I’ve received from the fans has been exceptional – thank you. I hope to see more of the same next season as we aim for an immediate return to the EFL.”
Carlisle’s drop into the National League has prompted a summer of reflection and restructuring. Hughes, who built strong rapport with the dressing room and restored belief in the final weeks of the campaign, is seen as central to the rebuild. The club’s hierarchy is backing him to mount a promotion push in 2025/26.
Chairman Tom Piatak paid tribute to the impact Hughes has already made and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the club forward:
“Mark brought the squad together during the closing stretch of the season and gave us a fighting chance. His leadership, composure, and connection with the players was clear, and we’re confident in his ability to lead us forward.”

Greg Abbott Leaves
In a separate development, Carlisle confirmed the departure of Head of Recruitment Greg Abbott. The 60-year-old, who previously managed the club from 2008 to 2013, leaves after two years in his most recent role.
Abbott returned to Carlisle in May 2022 and played a key part in recruitment during the club’s 2022/23 promotion-winning campaign. A club statement read:
“We would like to thank him for all his work and commitment, and we wish him all the best for the future.”
His exit marks the start of a broader overhaul behind the scenes, with the board understood to be exploring structural changes ahead of a busy summer window.
Writer’s View
Retaining Mark Hughes is a crucial first step for Carlisle United as they look to bounce back to the EFL at the first attempt. His impact late in the season, especially at home, suggested a squad playing with renewed confidence and identity.
With Greg Abbott’s departure also confirmed, the club now has a chance to reset both on and off the pitch. The next few weeks will be vital – but with Hughes at the helm, Carlisle fans can begin to look ahead with cautious optimism.
