Reading Braced For Interest In Key Star

Reading are preparing for a summer wrangle to keep hold of key star Charlie Savage, with Wrexham keen on the midfielder.

This has seen the youngster break into the Wales national team. He has earned two caps to date, both of which have come in friendlies against Gibraltar.

It’s not the first time that Savage has been linked with a move away from the Select Car Leasing Stadium. His impressive debut campaign led to rumours of an exit last summer, although he eventually stayed in Berkshire.

Wrexham Keen On Savage

According to The Wrexham Insiderthe Red Dragons have identified Savage as a transfer target ahead of their jump up to the Championship. It is claimed that they will be given a £40 million war chest this summer in order to build a squad capable of challenging for a place in the Premier League.

As such, there are expected to be between six and nine new arrivals at the STōK Cae Ras. Whilst they have been linked with a number of players already, including Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney, but it is said that there is genuine interest in Savage.

He isn’t the only midfielder on Wrexham’s radar though. The report also states that Rangers star Tom Lawrence is of major interest, with the 31-year-old expected to depart Ibrox at the end of the season.

Having spent time with the likes of Derby County, Ipswich Town, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers, the Welsh international has Championship pedigree. He has made 264 appearances in the second tier, racking up an impressive 90 goal contributions.

Writer’s View

Wrexham are unlikely to be the only Championship club interested in Charlie Savage this summer. He would be an excellent signing for the majority of clubs in the division above and it will be interesting to see if the Red Dragons spark a bidding war. For Reading, it would be a major blow to lose someone of his quality but that comes with success. They have arguably overachieved this season, missing out on a place in the play-offs on the final day. However, now their ownership problems are behind them, they will be hoping to keep this group of players together in order to launch a promotion bid next season.
