New Favourite Emerges In Hull City Managerial Search

Hull City have turned their attention to Plymouth Argyle’s Miron Muslic in their search for Ruben Selles’ successor, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

The Tigers opted to replace Liam Rosenior with Tim Walter last summer after falling short in their bid to reach the Championship play-offs. It was a decision which proved disastrous and the German was dismissed in November with the club languishing in the bottom three.

Reading’s Ruben Selles was eventually brought in, tasked with keeping the East Yorkshire-based team in the second tier. He achieved just that, with a final day draw against Portsmouth enough to salvage their safety on goal difference.

Although the 41-year-old hit his target, owner Acun Ilicali once again opted to pull the trigger earlier this week. In a club statement, it was claimed that “a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions.”

Attention Shifts To Muslic

Former Newcastle United midfielder and current Antalyaspor manager Emre Belozoglu immediately emerged as the frontrunner. Ilicali still has major ties to Turkish football and it was thought he was keen on the 44-year-old.

It is now claimed that Plymouth’s Miron Muslic has leapt to the front of the queue, with Darren Witcoop also stating the ex-Cardiff City boss Erol Bulut is under consideration.

The 42-year-old arrived at Home Park in January with the Pilgrims looking dead and buried in the relegation battle. Although they eventually suffered the drop into League One, he has been widely praised for the job he has done, including a stunning FA Cup victory over Premier League champions Liverpool in February.

This has seen his stock rise at an astronomical rate, with Hull now hoping to snatch him from the midsts of their former division rivals. However, any move is unlikely to be straight forward, with Muslic under contract for the next three years.

Writer’s View

There’s little doubt that Muslic appears to have bags of potential but he would be wise to resist the temptation to move to the MKM Stadium. Acun Ilicali has shown over the past year that he has little patience, starting with his bizarre dismissal of Liam Rosenior a year ago. The former Tigers star just missed out on the play-offs last season, leading to his dismissal, and was snapped up by French top flight side Strasbourg. His replacement at Hull was a disaster, whereas Selles has been punished for achieving exactly what he set out to do. Muslic would be better placed staying put and trying to guide Plymouth back into the Championship at the first time of asking.
