Hull City Turn Down Loan Approach for Defender

Hull City have rejected a loan bid from Derby County for right-back Cody Drameh, as the Championship club insist only a permanent move will be considered for the defender.

Derby manager John Eustace is keen on a reunion with Drameh, but Hull are standing firm on their transfer stance. The 23-year-old only joined Hull last year on a free transfer from Leeds United but could be on the move again—if a suitable permanent offer is made.

Eustace Keen on Defender

Drameh signed a three-year deal at the MKM Stadium, with the option of a further 12 months, and made 29 appearances in all competitions during the 2024/25 season, contributing one goal and one assist. Despite playing a regular role, Hull are open to a sale, though they have made it clear that a loan exit is not on the table.

Derby’s approach was driven by boss John Eustace, who previously managed Drameh during a successful loan spell at Birmingham City. However, their offer has been turned down, and any hopes of a reunion at Pride Park now depend on whether Derby are prepared to submit a permanent bid.

Hull Situation Complex

Hull’s managerial situation adds further complexity. Ruben Selles was dismissed despite guiding the Tigers to safety after taking charge in December, and the club—owned by Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali—is now searching for his replacement. Emre Belözoğlu is among the names linked with the vacant post.

The uncertainty hasn’t halted Hull’s squad planning, and it’s believed the club are open to offers for several players as they aim to rebuild and improve on a disappointing campaign, which saw them finish just one point above the relegation zone.

Drameh, who began his career at Fulham before moving to Leeds, is now entering a pivotal phase in his career. Whether in England or abroad, the coming weeks could shape his next chapter—with a return to familiar surroundings under Eustace still a possibility if Derby are willing to meet Hull’s valuation.

Writer’s View

This move highlights the growing ambition at Derby under John Eustace, but also the financial realism many clubs face in the Championship. A loan deal may have suited Derby’s budget, but Hull are clearly prioritising long-term squad management and transfer income. With interest from France potentially offering a more lucrative exit, Derby may need to act quickly—and decisively—if they want to win the race for Drameh’s signature.
