Newly promoted Wrexham are reportedly interested in signing Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney this summer.
The 34-year-old is a target for the Welsh outfit, who will compete in the second tier next season after three consecutive promotions.
Looking to Add Vital Experience to the Squad
Phil Parkinson’s side are looking to add more vital experience this summer, and with financial backing, the club have set their sights on Cairney, a former Scottish international who has made over 350 appearances for Fulham since 2015.
Cairney joined the Whites from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2015 and has since won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League three times in white and black.
The Scotsman has also played for Yorkshire outfits Hull City and Leeds United, the latter of which he came through in their youth ranks.
The midfielder has featured a total of 23 Premier League appearances this season, scoring one goal in the process.
Club Record Fee?
The report claims that the transfer would require a club-record fee from the Red Dragons, and that talks have already begun, but are in the early stages, between the two clubs for the midfielder.
The current record is striker Sam Smith, who joined from Reading in January for a reported £2 million.
Wrexham’s early interest and willingness to spend money at an early stage certainly echoes a motive of intent to the rest of the league. With the side never playing in this division before, they seemingly know what they need in order to stay in this division and potentially push for a fourth successive promotion.
Writer’s View
This early transfer rumour signals intent from owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and it looks like they are again putting their money where their mouth is and investing again in this squad.
Adding Cairney to their squad would certainly be a signing and a half, adding experience, but also proven quality, in a division he’s won promotion out of three times. From the player’s perspective, it’s also a chance to earn one last pay day, as his wage certainly won’t be cheap.
The fact that talks are already ongoing suggests that Fulham are willing to let go of their longest-serving player, to perhaps focus on a new beginning at Craven Cottage, with the club pushing for European football under manager Marco Silva.
