New Destination Emerges In Sheffield Wednesday Manager Race

Incoming Championship clubs Leicester City and Southampton could miss out on Sheffield Wednesday‘s Danny Rohl, as a new contender has emerged.

The German manager, who has done exceptionally at Sheffield Wednesday despite off-field circumstances, is expected to leave Hillsborough this summer as his future remains uncertain. He previously revealed that he had already confirmed he had decided his future to Owls chair Dejphon Chansiri and in an interview with Kicker spoke in the past tense about his time at the club.

Rohl Could Join Top Flight Side

A new potential destination has emerged for Rohl, with Sky Sports reporting that Rohl is in the frame for the final shortlist at Scottish giants Rangers. He stands alongside other candidates such as Gary O’Neil and ex-Luton Town and Watford boss Rob Edwards.

Southampton has been a long-standing link for the 36-year-old boss, who has previously coached at the club under Ralph Hassenhuttl as his assistant. He was favoured for the role when Russell Martin was sacked in December but the Hampshire club decided to appoint Ivan Juric.

Rangers are in search of a new boss after dismissing Phillipe Clement as the Ibrox club fell away from the Scottish Premiership title fight, with Celtic equaling their 55 league titles under former Leicester and Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers.

Writers’ View

Whilst certainly a good choice for Rangers, it feels like Danny Rohl is an outsider for being appointed by the Glasgow club. His services in Sheffield have been exemplary and should have achieved much more if backed by better owners. Rangers is an enticing option but this latest development may not change much for the duel between Leicester City and Southampton to lure the German to their projects. With his previous affiliation at the club, The Saints have a slight edge but it is up to either side to give an enticing offer. What is more certain, however, is that Rohl is on his way out at Sheffield Wednesday.
