Milton Oni is edging closer to a comeback for Colchester United after a season-ending knee injury stalled his promising rise.
The 19-year-old suffered a serious ACL rupture and meniscus tear in August but is now expected to return for pre-season.
Cowley Applauds Oni’s Mental Strength
Oni’s breakthrough was rapid last summer. He featured against Reading in the Carabao Cup and made his league debut against MK Dons, playing a key role in a goal. But his momentum was cruelly halted during the Brentford clash, when he tore his cruciate ligament just 60 minutes into the biggest game of his fledgling career.
Head coach Danny Cowley acknowledged the emotional and physical toll the injury has taken on the young midfielder.
“Milton’s working hard and it’s been tough for him,” said Cowley. “He hits the ground running in pre-season and finds a fantastic level… then he ruptures his cruciate. If that doesn’t show you how tough professional football is, then nothing will.”
The setback marked Oni’s first significant injury and has required a steep learning curve. Cowley added that the club has had to support the teenager through both the medical and mental demands of long-term recovery.
“He doesn’t really know how to live as a professional athlete, let alone a professional athlete with a serious injury,” said Cowley. “We’ve had to be really demanding of him, but he’s a really good kid.”
Oni is now entering the final stages of rehab, with running and pitch-based work on the horizon. Cowley remains hopeful that the midfielder will be ready for the start of the 2025–26 campaign.

Bright Future Still Beckons
Despite the injury, the U’s coaching staff remain convinced that Oni has the talent to make a lasting impact at League Two level and beyond. His brief appearances early in the season offered a glimpse of his energy and potential, and there is optimism he will quickly recapture that form.
With Colchester looking to improve next season following a turbulent campaign, Oni’s return could be a timely boost to the squad’s depth and dynamism in midfield.
Writer’s View
Milton Oni’s situation is a reminder of how brutally football can turn — especially for young players on the brink of a breakthrough. That Cowley speaks so highly of him, both as a player and a person, says a lot about his character.
Assuming he returns fit and firing, Oni could be a key piece for Colchester next season. He brings youthful drive and technical ability, and with a full pre-season under his belt, he may well emerge stronger from the adversity.
