West Bromwich Albion Handed Manager Search Blow

Potential West Bromwich Albion managerial candidate John Mousinho has turned down any potential interest in a switch to the club.

The Portsmouth manager has been a frequent link with the vacancy at The Hawthorns after they decided to part ways with Tony Mowbray at the end of the season. After seemingly been strong playoff contenders under Carlos Corberan, Albion tailed off following his departure to Valencia and ultimately fell short of a top-six finish.

Mousinho Distances Himself From Role

Portsmouth had expected interest in their manager, who has seen success with a League One title win and managed to keep the club in the Championship in their first season back in the second tier since 2012. Sporting Director Richard Hughes commented on Mousinho’s future, believing that the 39-year-old was happy at the club.

Pompey’s boss has since come out and discussed whether his future remains at Fratton Park, telling the Portsmouth News (Quotes via Birmingham Live):

“Genuinely, my mindset is I’d like to have a long, successful career at Portsmouth.

“I still feel incredibly grateful to the club for taking a chance on me and a risk on me in the first place. I’ll never forget that.

‘We can talk about my ambitions and the club’s ambitions matching up in the future, but this is a club that went and took a risk on me that no one else did. There’s that alignment there, in terms of what we’re trying to achieve.”

West Bromwich Albion’s search continues and now two leading candidates are out of the running to take charge of the club. Marti Cifuentes did seem like the perfect candidate but moved in another direction from the Queens Park Rangers man, and now John Mousinho has seemingly reaffirmed his commitment at Portsmouth. Where The Baggies turn next will be fascinating to see in trying to get themselves back on track to where they were under Carlos Corberan.
