Portsmouth In Battle For Premier League Starlet

Portsmouth are facing competition from European sides to sign Sierra Leonean international Hindolo Mustapha.

John Mousinho’s side managed to secure safety with a handful of games to spare, allowing the Fratton Park club to keep their upward trajectory going with a second season in the Championship. Eyes have already turned to reinforcements for next season, with as many as seven players currently out of contract this summer.

Pompey Target Palace Forward

According to the Portsmouth News, the Hampshire club have already found one possible attacking recruit in Hindolo Mustapha. He has been a longstanding figure of interest for Portsmouth, with Mousinho watching the Crystal Palace loanee four times in person.

However, they are not alone in trying to convince the 18-year-old to join their side, with Eredivisie sides Ajax and Feyenoord interested alongside an array of unnamed English clubs. Mustapha has made a big impression at The Eagles in their youth setups, playing 71 times across the Under-18 and Premier League 2 sides and has earned three senior caps for Sierra Leone.

Spaces are opening up in the attacking department for Pompey, with Liverpool loanee Kaide Gordon set to depart at the end of this month alongside Sunderland‘s Adil Aouchiche. Striker Mark O’Mahoney only managed 13 appearances for the club and will head back to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Writer’s View

Identifying young talents is always the best way for clubs to grow some funds in the future and Portsmouth look to be doing that with a relentless scouting campaign of Hindolo Mustapha. He has been a standout for Crystal Palace as they target the Premier League 2 title, with the right-winger scoring a brace in their last match against Chelsea last week. Compared to Ajax and Feyenoord, Pompey would be likely the ideal destination to go to in order to get game time, but would be facing very stiff competition in Abu Kamara, who was the club’s standout performer across this season.
