Derby County head coach John Eustace has confirmed he wants long-serving defender Craig Forsyth to remain at the club beyond this summer, calling the 36-year-old an “unbelievable servant” in the wake of Championship survival.
Forsyth is one of 11 players out of contract at Pride Park this summer, with the club’s retained list deadline approaching. His recent form, including goals in crucial wins over Blackburn and Preston, has strengthened his case for a new deal.
“Derby through and through” – Eustace backs Forsyth stay
Since joining Derby in 2013, Forsyth has been a consistent figure across a turbulent period in the club’s history. This season, his contributions were vital in Derby’s bid to stay in the second tier, with the defender stepping up in multiple positions following an injury to Callum Elder.
His adaptability — playing at both centre-back and later as a left wing-back — drew plaudits from fans and coaching staff alike.
“Definitely. I think he’s been an unbelievable servant for the football club,” said Eustace. “It’s easy to write players off because of their age and when you’re used to having somebody around, you take them for granted.
“His performances at left centre-back before we had to change him to left wing-back have been very, very good. He’s led by example and he’s Derby through and through. He’s somebody that I want to keep at the club for sure next season.”
The Rams have already extended Kane Wilson’s deal by triggering a one-year option and are in talks over a longer-term agreement. Forsyth’s future now appears to be a top priority for Eustace as Derby look to stabilise their squad following another testing campaign.
Other players out of contract include Liam Thompson, Conor Washington, Tyrese Fornah, Sonny Bradley and Tom Barkhuizen. Decisions on all are expected in the coming days.

Writer’s View
Craig Forsyth’s case is a rare example where loyalty, form and leadership intersect. At 36, he’s defied age to remain a key figure, stepping into multiple roles with professionalism and grit. John Eustace clearly values that continuity and experience — and rightly so.
In a squad likely to undergo change, retaining a player who understands the culture and demands of Derby County may prove just as important as any new signing.
