Our Three Predictions For Port Vale vs Gillingham
- First Prediction: Port Vale To Win – 57/100
- Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 4/5
- Third Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 17/20
First Prediction For Port Vale vs Gillingham – Port Vale To Win – 57/100
Port Vale head into this game in second place in League Two and one point behind leaders Doncaster Rovers. With Grant McCann’s side possessing a slightly better goal difference, the likelihood is that the Valiants will need to secure a win to stand any chance of clinching the title. Having spent much of the first half of the season battling Walsall at the top of the table, they looked to have blown their automatic promotion chances when they struggled with consistency between December and mid-March. However, they have since won seven of their last 10, taking advantage of slips in form from the Saddlers and Bradford City to move back into the top three. Automatic promotion was confirmed last weekend, but Darren Moore will be hoping to finish the season and the highest of highs in front of their own supporters.
In stark contrast, Gillingham have had a season to forget. They were one of the pre-season favourites to secure promotion but they have underperformed, even briefly flirting with relegation. This has seen both Mark Bonner and John Coleman come and go, with Gareth Ainsworth poached from Shrewsbury Town in March. The Gills are yet to taste defeat under the former Wycombe Wanderers boss though, having picked up two wins and six draws. Still, this is Port Vale’s day and they may just be too strong for the Kent-based team.
Second Prediction For Port Vale vs Gillingham – Both Teams To Score – 4/5
Both Port Vale and Gillingham rank fairly low in this market this season. The home side have scored and conceded in the same game in 49% of their fixtures, whilst the Gills are at just 44%. However, the form book is often out of the window in the latter stages o the campaign, which is true for both these teams.
Port Vale are in fine form in front of goal, failing to score just once in their last 12. They’ve hit the back of the net 14 times in their last five, although have conceded seven. This includes two against Grimsby Town, three against Carlisle United and two against Walsall.
Gillingham have also seen an upturn in this market in recent weeks. All of the six draws under Gareth Ainsworth have been score draws, meaning that 75% of the games in which he has taken charge has seen both teams score.
Third Prediction For Port Vale vs Gillingham – Over 2.5 Goals – 17/20
As per the previous prediction, both teams rank low in this market. Port Vale have seen just 20 of their 45 fixtures achieve three or more goals whilst Gillingham rank the lowest in the division with 13. However, the Valiants have seen a huge increase here in recent weeks, with four of their last five achieving this marker. The only anomaly is their 2-0 win over AFC Wimbledon last week.
Meanwhile, Gillingham’s 2-2 draw with Salford City is the only time over 2.5 goals has been hit in Gareth Ainsworth’s stint in charge thus far. They’ve also scored in every game in which he has been at the helm1-1. With recent form indicating the Gills will score, Port Vale will need to dig deep to secure the three points. They are averaging nearly three goals a game in their last five though.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head
Port Vale have found form at just the right time. Having sunk as low as sixth by mid-March, they have recorded just two defeats in their last 10, winning seven. A 3-0 victory over MK Dons on March 15th sparked an upturn in fortunes, and they’ve since beaten Morecambe (1-0), Crewe Alexandra (1-0), Bradford City (2-0), Walsall (3-2), Bromley (5-0) and AFC Wimbledon (2-0). The last of those wins saw them earn promotion back to League One at the first time of asking.
Gillingham have become a typical Gareth Ainsworth side since the 51-year-old took over in March. They have become incredibly tough to beat and are yet to lose under their new boss. However, in his eight games in charge, they have drawn six. This saw them pick up a point against Harrogate Town (1-1), Colchester United (1-1), Salford City (2-2), Chesterfield (1-1), Cheltenham Town (1-1) and Swindon Town (1-1). The Gills have also picked up a pair of 1-0 victories against MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon.
Gillingham won the reverse fixture by a solitary goal in November. This was their first meeting since 2017, when the Gills were in League One. The last meeting at Vale Park saw the home side win 2-1 in 2016. Overall, there isn’t a lot to separate the two teams over the years, with Port Vale winning 18 of their previous 53 clashes, Gillingham winning 17 and 18 ending in a draw.
