Luton Town Boss Reveals Why Duo Were Omitted From Fixture

Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield has revealed why experienced duo Jordan Clark and Kal Naismith were left out of the starting line-up in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Coventry City, despite both being fit and available for selection.

Clark, who has played a key role since Bloomfield’s arrival, had returned to full training after recovering from a calf issue picked up against Derby County. Meanwhile, Naismith had also been cleared to feature after missing the Bristol City win due to loan agreement restrictions. But despite expectations that both would start, Bloomfield opted for continuity – a decision he later explained was driven by caution and confidence in the existing line-up.

Risk Management at the Core of the Decision

The Luton boss has overseen a late-season resurgence at Kenilworth Road, guiding the Hatters to back-to-back home wins for the first time since December. Saturday’s clash against Coventry provided an opportunity to build on that momentum, but Bloomfield made it clear post-match that pushing Clark too soon could have jeopardised his fitness further.

“Clicks would say he was fully fit,” said Bloomfield, referring to Clark. “I just felt he had an injury in his calf and the longer he played the more risk he was at to reinjure himself.

“Because the level of performance was so good on Monday, I just felt it was an unnecessary risk, knowing full well that we had a top player to come on and influence the game in the second half should we need.

“Ultimately that’s how it played out. I thought Clicks was fantastic when he came on, real composure. So it just felt like we couldn’t expose him to reinjury when Lamine and Walshy, who was man of the match last week in my mind, were doing the job.”

Naismith also made a second-half appearance, replacing Christ Makosso at half-time, as Luton capitalised on Coventry’s early red card to dominate possession. Clark was introduced just after the hour mark, and almost had an instant impact—linking up with Milli All to create a chance that clipped the post.

Writer’s View

Bloomfield’s decision to prioritise player welfare over immediate tactical strength shows a maturing leadership style at Luton. With the play-offs out of reach, the manager’s eye is clearly on long-term squad stability and building rhythm for next season. Clark and Naismith remain pivotal figures, and Bloomfield’s trust in his broader squad could prove vital as he looks to reshape Luton into a serious promotion contender next term.
