29-Year-Old To Leave Norwich City This Summer

Norwich City have announced that goalkeeper Angus Gunn will leave the club this summer, bringing an emotional chapter to an end for a player with deep roots at Carrow Road.

Farewell for a fan favourite

Gunn, 29, will depart the Canaries when his contract expires at the end of the season. The decision marks the conclusion of his second spell at the club, having initially risen through the academy ranks before returning as a senior player in 2021.

Born in Norwich and son of former City manager and goalkeeper Bryan Gunn, the Scotland international’s connection to the club was more than professional – it was personal. After spells with Manchester City, Southampton, and a loan at Stoke City, Gunn returned to Norfolk, eventually becoming a mainstay between the sticks.

Since rejoining the Canaries permanently, he has made 171 appearances in all competitions, recording 47 clean sheets. His consistency and commanding presence earned the admiration of supporters and helped guide the team through both Premier League and Championship campaigns.

Alongside Gunn, Onel Hernández and Jacob Sørensen will also leave the club following the expiration of their contracts. Hernández, a Cuban international, featured more than 200 times for Norwich, playing key roles in two Championship-winning seasons. Sørensen, who arrived in 2020 from Denmark, was a reliable and versatile presence across 100 appearances.

Sporting director Ben Knapper paid tribute to the trio’s contribution to the club’s recent successes:

“Angus, Onel and Jacob have all played a significant part in our club’s history. They have been part of some very successful teams and their achievements here have been fantastic. I know our supporters will join me in showing our appreciation to each of the players for their efforts and contributions to the club during our final fixture of the season this weekend against Cardiff City.

“We all wish them the very best in the next steps of their respective careers. They will all be welcomed back at Carrow Road in the future.”

Also confirmed to be leaving are Jonathan Tomkinson and Archie Mair. Tomkinson made a brief first-team impact with appearances in the Carabao Cup and Championship, while Mair departs six years after arriving from Aberdeen.

The club also noted that further updates on the status of Under-21 and development squad players will be released in due course.

Writer’s view

Gunn’s exit is undoubtedly the headline departure for Norwich fans. His local ties, leadership and dependable performances made him more than just a goalkeeper – he was a symbol of the club’s identity.

As the Canaries begin to reshape their squad, finding a replacement with Gunn’s pedigree and connection may prove difficult. While all departing players will be missed, Gunn’s farewell feels especially poignant in a summer of transition for Norwich City.
