Wrexham Receive Potential Transfer Boost

Wrexham have received a potential transfer boost following the news that veteran striker Jamie Vardy will leave Leicester City at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old has opted to call time on his 13-year stay at the King Power Stadium following confirmation that the Foxes will return to the Championship next season. Despite coming to the twilight of his career, he is still Leicester’s top scorer this season with seven Premier League goals, taking his tally for the club to 198 goals since joining from Fleetwood Town in 2012.

The striker took to social media to announce his imminent departure, although insisted he has no intention of retiring. He has been linked with a number of moves over the past few months, including to League One promotion contenders Wrexham.

The Red Dragons are hoping to continue their meteoric rise through the football pyramid by earning a place in the Championship next season. They have been linked with the ex-England international in the past, with executive director Humphrey Ker admitting last summer he would not rule out the move.

Could Vardy Move To Wrexham?

Despite his age, Vardy will be an attractive proposition for a number of clubs this summer. There are bound to be Championship clubs interested, especially considering he hit 18 goals in the division last season.

His wages will prove a major stumbling block though. He is reported to be earning in excess of £100,000 per week, meaning he would have to take a major pay cut in order to continue his career at a lower level.

Wrexham harbour ambitions of playing in the Premier League and could see the attacker as the man to lead their attack should they find themselves in the second tier next season. However, they brought in two strikers in January, spending big on Sam Smith whilst Jay Rodriguez arrived on a free transfer.

Should they move forward with their interest, the Welsh-based outfit are likely to face competition from Saudi Arabia.

Vardy will go down as one of Leicester’s best ever players, if not the greatest. He was key in their Premier League triumph in 2016, as well as two Championship titles, the FA Cup and the Community Shield. That’s before his individual accolades are mentioned. Wrexham and their supporters would love to see him at the STōK Cae Ras, but the likelihood is that even their financial riches won’t be enough to realistically explore a deal.
