Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley has issued a defiant rallying call ahead of their all-important final two games of the season.
The U’s are one of eight teams that are still mathematically in contention to land a play-off spot in League Two. After a slow start to the season, they have been in formidable form since the turn of the year and found themselves in the top seven as recent as last week.
Cowley cut a frustrated figure on Easter Monday though, when he watched his side handed a footballing lesson against current leaders Doncaster Rovers. This saw them replaced by Grimsby Town in that all-important seventh spot.
Colchester now face a crucial clash on Saturday. They travel to Salford City, who sit just one place and one point behind them in the table.
“I Can Promise You” – Cowley Desperate To Secure Top Seven Berth
Speaking to BBC Radio Essex, Cowley made no secret of his desire to get his team over the line:
“We haven’t come this far, just to come this far.
“I can promise you – and anyone with Colchester United in their hearts – we’re going to go there on Saturday and give it a right go.
“We’ve all sacrificed a lot to get this club to this point – it’s taken an huge effort from everybody, players, staff and supporters.
“We will dust ourselves down we’ll be really focussed and determined to respond in a really positive way.
“We’ve said all season, you’ll have to kill us to beat us. We’ll got to Salford and we might have some injuries and problems but we’re going to give it one hell of a go.
“This isn’t a time to feel sorry for ourselves. It’s a time for us to dig deep.”
Writer’s View
The race for promotion in League Two continues to be the most fascinating in the country. Whilst four teams are still fighting it out for the title, there are a further eight in play-off contention. With only two games left to play, it’s staggering that half the division can still go up. Colchester will feel they deserve the opportunity due to their excellent second half of the season, but football is a cruel game. Defeat at Salford would be a hammer blow, although a win would surely make them one of the favourites.
