Wrexham could be set to lose striker Sam Dalby this summer, despite offering the in-form forward a new contract.
While the Red Dragons are flying high in League One, Dalby has become a peripheral figure, instead plying his trade north of the border.
Dundee United keen to push for Dalby
Dalby has caught the eye during a superb loan spell at Dundee United, scoring 13 goals in 26 Scottish Premiership appearances. The 24-year-old has flourished north of the border after being allowed to leave Wrexham on loan in the final year of his deal.
Now out of contract this summer, Dalby is attracting serious interest. Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin is desperate to keep him and has urged his club to “push the boat out” to secure the striker’s services permanently.
“We’re going to try and compete and hold on to Sam. We are realistic about that situation but, at the same time, if ever there was a player worth pushing the boat out for, then a proven goalscorer would certainly be that.”
Goodwin admitted rival clubs are likely to be circling but stressed Dalby’s importance to United’s future plans. The Scottish side are preparing to offer a strong package in a bid to fend off competition.

Wrexham’s summer striker dilemma
Wrexham, meanwhile, have their own decisions to make. Phil Parkinson already has an overloaded forward line after January arrivals Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez, leaving Dalby’s chances of regular football back at the STōK Cae Ras uncertain.
With Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer both potentially leaving, and Steven Fletcher contemplating playing on at 38, the landscape could yet change. However, Dalby must decide whether to risk limited opportunities or move permanently to Dundee United where he has been thriving.
Wrexham have formally offered Dalby a new contract, but it may not be enough to convince him to stay with his stock at its highest level yet. A decision on his future is expected soon after the season concludes.
Writer’s view
Dalby’s progress in Scotland has been remarkable, and it’s no surprise Dundee United want to sign him permanently. The SPFL can be a good breeding ground for strikers, and Dalby is getting regular football.
Wrexham’s bloated striker list makes a return complicated. Unless Dalby is guaranteed regular minutes, a permanent switch to Dundee feels like the best move for his career right now.
