Reading FC kept their League One play-off hopes firmly alive with a commanding 5-1 victory over Mansfield Town — but it was the post-match fallout that grabbed just as many headlines, with Nigel Clough offering a scathing assessment of his players.
The Royals surged to a convincing win, inspired by a brace from Jayden Wareham and further goals from Lewis Wing and Billy Bodin. The result leaves Noel Hunt’s men level on points with sixth-placed Leyton Orient heading into the final two games of the season, trailing only on goal difference.
For Mansfield, however, it was an afternoon to forget. Despite a strong opening spell, individual errors led to their undoing, and Clough made his feelings abundantly clear in the aftermath.
“The mistakes are absolutely inexcusable. Louis Reed for the first one playing a blind ball after being asked not to play it,” Clough said. “The second one was George Williams, a double mistake with the clearance and putting it in his own net… The worst for me, the game is over on 94 minutes and Deji does that. For a player of his experience to do that, criminal.”
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Clough claimed his team had performed well for large parts of the first half.
“For 35 minutes that is as well as we have played and I thought we were the better team,” he said. “Quality in the final third and decision-making let us down.”
Reading Eye Final Push with Confidence
Reading’s form has peaked at just the right moment. With two matches remaining — away at Bristol Rovers and then home to Barnsley — the Royals know that maximum points could clinch a play-off place if Leyton Orient slip up.
Wareham’s clinical finishing and Wing’s long-range strike underlined a team growing in confidence and belief, and Hunt’s men are now unbeaten in five.
Mansfield, meanwhile, must regroup quickly, with lingering frustrations threatening to spill into their own run-in.

Writer’s View
Clough’s frustration boiled over — and justifiably so. The catalogue of individual errors was shocking at this level, especially given the experience in Mansfield’s ranks. For Reading, the timing couldn’t be better. Wareham is firing, Wing is pulling strings, and momentum is firmly on their side. With Bristol Rovers next, the Royals will fancy their chances of crashing the play-off party.
