Blackpool head coach Steve Bruce has praised on-loan Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer following another strong performance, further reinforcing his desire to keep the youngster at Bloomfield Road beyond the current season.
Tyrer, who initially endured a rocky start after arriving on loan from the Premier League side last summer, has grown into the number one role for the Seasiders. His 12 clean sheets in 35 appearances are a testament to that progress, with his recent form earning plaudits from Bruce.
During Blackpool’s 2-1 defeat to Wrexham on Easter Monday, the 23-year-old made a pair of crucial stops in the first half to keep the match level. While the result didn’t go in Blackpool’s favour, Tyrer’s contributions did not go unnoticed.
“He made two great saves to keep us in it, two really exceptional saves – and we needed that,” Bruce said. “Harry has learnt on the job, so we’ll see what develops over the next few weeks, and see what we can do.”
The Seasiders’ boss admitted the team didn’t do enough overall to match Wrexham, but made it clear he remains a big admirer of Tyrer’s progress. He has spoken on several occasions about the growth the young goalkeeper has shown since arriving from Goodison Park.
Bruce Eyes Extended Stay for Loanee Keeper
This isn’t the first time Bruce has expressed his interest in keeping Tyrer beyond the loan spell. Just last month, he outlined how far the player has come and his wish to retain him — even if the final decision lies with Everton.
“We’d like him to stay, it’s about whether that’s possible because he’s not ours,” he said. “The growth we’ve put into him has been huge. He certainly feels and looks far more comfortable than he was six months ago.”
Bruce also pointed out the effort Tyrer has made to adapt to EFL football, from working on his fitness to becoming a more commanding presence in the penalty area.

Harry Tyrer
Tyrer progressed through Everton’s academy after joining as a seven-year-old. He signed his first professional contract in January 2020 and featured in Everton U21’s EFL Trophy campaign.
He played in a pre-season match against Preston North End in 2020 before signing a new deal in 2022. He spent the 2022–23 season on loan at Chester, making 55 appearances, followed by a stint at Chesterfield in 2023–24.
In April 2024, he extended his Everton contract until 2026. Tyrer played 43 times as Chesterfield secured promotion back to the EFL.
Writer’s View
Harry Tyrer’s development has been one of Blackpool’s more promising storylines this season. While results have wavered, his consistency has helped steady the back line. Steve Bruce clearly sees long-term potential, but keeping Tyrer could come down to whether Everton see his future elsewhere. Regardless, the groundwork laid at Bloomfield Road has been key to the young keeper’s rise.
