Bristol Rovers’ battle to avoid relegation suffered another setback after top scorer Ruel Sotiriou was forced off with an ankle injury during their 1-0 defeat to Stevenage.
The 24-year-old forward, who has scored six goals this season, limped off just after the half-hour mark at the Memorial Stadium, replaced by Isaac Hutchinson. Sotiriou’s exit leaves manager Inigo Calderon facing a potential selection headache for Rovers’ final two critical games.
Gas Left To Count The Cost
Already missing strikers Promise Omochere and Chris Martin for the remainder of the campaign, and with Cardiff City loanee Michael Reindorf also sidelined since February, Rovers’ attacking options are now worryingly thin.
Post-match, Calderon admitted the full extent of Sotiriou’s injury remained unclear but confirmed there was significant bruising around the ankle.
Calderon said: “I haven’t asked but I think it was something in his ankle because I could see he has a bruise on his ankle. I don’t know what happened, to be fair. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”
Sotiriou had Rovers’ best chance against Stevenage, narrowly missing with a deflected effort. His departure disrupted Rovers’ rhythm, and they failed to find an equaliser after falling behind early in the match.
Should Sotiriou be ruled out, the burden up front will fall on 20-year-old Gatlin O’Donkor, who has started regularly despite appearing short of full fitness, and youngsters Michael Reindorf and Ollie Dewsbury, aged 19 and 17 respectively.
With matches against Reading and Blackpool to come, Rovers desperately need firepower to keep their fading survival hopes alive. They currently sit precariously close to the drop zone after a run of just one win in eight games.

Ruel Sotiriou
Sotiriou made his Leyton Orient debut in 2017 and gained early experience through multiple loan spells, scoring on debut for Heybridge Swifts, Leatherhead, and Dover Athletic. His goal for Dover against Southend in the FA Cup highlighted his potential.
Returning to Orient, he made his Football League debut in December 2019, scoring in his first two matches. A strong run in March 2022 earned him the League Two Player of the Month award. After the 2023–24 season, he joined Bristol Rovers, scoring his first goal in September 2024 and improving under new manager Iñigo Calderón in the second half of the season.
Writer’s View
Bristol Rovers’ injury troubles could not have come at a worse time. Ruel Sotiriou’s potential absence leaves them desperately short of experience and cutting edge in attack. Inigo Calderon faces a huge task to rally his young and inexperienced strikeforce for the club’s two remaining fixtures. If Rovers are to pull off survival, they will need to show resilience, composure, and find goals from somewhere — fast.
