Mark Hughes believes Carlisle United are capable of winning all their remaining League Two matches as the fight to avoid relegation reaches a critical point.
The Blues face Accrington Stanley this afternoon with hopes high following three consecutive wins that have reignited their survival bid. Over 1,000 travelling supporters are set to back Hughes’ side at a sold-out Wham Stadium.
Momentum Building For Carlisle
Victory today could move Carlisle to within a point of safety, depending on results elsewhere. However, defeat coupled with a Tranmere Rovers win at Barrow would confirm their relegation to the National League.
Hughes is adamant, though, that Carlisle’s recent form has given them every reason to believe they can complete a great escape.
“Our belief’s intact,” Hughes said. “Nothing that happened on Friday [the 3-2 win against Port Vale] has damaged that, so we’re in a good place. Can we win each and every one? On the evidence of [Friday], yes we can.”
The head coach must make at least one change today, with Matt Dennis suspended following his red card against Port Vale. Joe Hugill, on loan from Manchester United, is in contention to replace him in the starting line-up.
Leading striker Luke Kelly, who has scored four goals in Carlisle’s recent upturn, is again expected to lead the line despite having seldom played two games in such quick succession during his time at the club. Hughes, however, is confident the forward can rise to the occasion once more.
In a further boost, midfielder Elliot Embleton returns from suspension, offering additional attacking options as Carlisle look to continue their impressive resurgence under Hughes’ stewardship.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the relegation battle, Morecambe face the prospect of relegation if they fail to beat Salford City today, with results elsewhere also potentially condemning the Shrimps regardless of their outcome.
Writer’s View
Mark Hughes’ optimism has clearly seeped into his Carlisle United squad, with recent performances suggesting belief is back in the camp. Facing a pivotal test at Accrington, the Blues must harness their momentum and seize the opportunity to keep their survival dream alive. While the odds remain against them, their fighting spirit could yet produce one of the most dramatic finishes of the season.
