Wigan Athletic have suffered a setback in their League One campaign after Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers was forced to end his season early due to a recurring back injury.
The 20-year-old had returned to the DW Stadium last summer aiming to build on a promising spell but has now been recalled by Liverpool to focus on his recovery. Chambers made 12 starts for the Latics this season before injury curtailed his campaign.
Back Injury Forces Early Return
Speaking to Wigan Today, Wigan manager Ryan Lowe revealed that Chambers had been struggling for some time before the decision was taken to end his loan spell.
“It’s down to Liverpool to come out and say that, but he won’t be with us now. His loan’s finished, and he’s back at Liverpool for his recovery and whatnot. He’s had another recurrence of the injury and his season will be done,” said Lowe.
Chambers had previously missed a chunk of the season from October to November due to the same back problem, an issue linked to his physical development. Lowe admitted the player was desperate to contribute but his fitness issues became increasingly apparent during training and matches.
“It is gutting for him, because he is a very talented footballer. I’ve spoken to him and told him his sole focus is getting fit and ready,” Lowe added.
Wigan’s Defensive Challenges Deepen
Chambers’ absence leaves Wigan facing additional challenges as they try to finish the season strongly. The Latics have already endured a disrupted campaign, with injuries and squad instability hampering their efforts in League One.
The left-back was seen as a crucial part of the club’s development plans, and his early departure forces Lowe into further reshuffling during the run-in. It’s another blow for a squad that has struggled for consistency across the campaign.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will monitor Chambers closely, with hopes he can take part in their pre-season programme ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Given uncertainty over the futures of senior left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, opportunities could open up if Chambers can return fully fit.
For now, Wigan must adjust to life without one of their most promising young loanees as they aim to end the season on a positive note.
Writer’s View
Luke Chambers’ premature exit is a significant blow for Wigan at a key point in their season. His composure and energy down the left flank offered the Latics an extra dimension. While his long-term future remains bright at Liverpool, Wigan’s immediate focus must turn to finding a solution to cover his absence as they push to finish the campaign as strongly as possible.
