Blackpool have issued a stern reminder to their supporters ahead of Monday’s clash with Wrexham, warning against any discriminatory behaviour following past incidents involving Red Dragons star James McClean.
As Phil Parkinson’s side head to Bloomfield Road for a must-win game in their promotion battle, the Seasiders have moved to underline their zero-tolerance policy on abuse, referencing previous sanctions imposed after sectarian abuse directed at McClean during his time at Wigan Athletic in 2023.
With Wrexham’s promotion hopes hanging by a thread after a frustrating draw against Bristol Rovers, tensions will be high, but both clubs are eager to avoid unsavoury scenes overshadowing the contest.
Blackpool Respond with Firm Message to Fans
In a statement released ahead of the Easter Monday fixture, Blackpool stressed their commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all players and supporters.
“Ahead of the upcoming fixture against Wrexham on Easter Monday, the Club reminds supporters of the zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, harassment and discriminatory behaviour/chanting.
“Any form of racially biased, homophobic or sexist abuse, harassment or discriminatory behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Anyone found to have taken part in such activity may face arrest, prosecution, confiscation of their season ticket and being banned from all future games,” the statement read.
The club also highlighted the £35,000 fine and FA Action Plan they were subjected to in 2023, warning that repeat offences could result in harsher penalties and further sanctions from the Football Association.
McClean, a divisive figure at times due to his political views and refusal to wear a poppy on his shirt, was subjected to sectarian abuse from a section of Blackpool fans during his last visit. The Northern Irish international has often drawn criticism but has also been outspoken about the discrimination he has faced throughout his career.
Wrexham will be hoping their experienced winger can stay focused as they chase an essential three points in their bid for League One football. With automatic promotion no longer in their own hands, Parkinson’s men will need both results and discipline to go their way in the final run-in.
Blackpool’s call for respect is a clear message that the focus should remain firmly on the football when the two sides meet in a high-stakes contest on the coast.

Writer’s View
Blackpool’s strong pre-match statement is a timely reminder of the importance of respect and sportsmanship in football. With tensions running high for Wrexham’s promotion push, it is vital that the focus stays on the pitch and that James McClean, and all players, are protected from abuse. Monday’s clash promises drama – but it must be remembered for the right reasons.
