Newport County Planning Big Summer Move – But Fans Might Not Expect This

Newport County are set to prioritise strengthening their defence in the upcoming summer transfer window after a campaign full of mixed emotions, according to head coach Nelson Jardim.

The Exiles stand on the brink of securing their League Two status, needing a victory at Milton Keynes Dons on Good Friday to guarantee safety. Results elsewhere could also confirm their survival.

Despite early predictions of a relegation battle, County enjoyed a bright start and found a crucial vein of form in February. However, Jardim believes bolstering their defensive options is essential if they are to push on next season.

Defensive Woes Highlighted

While injuries and suspensions disrupted consistency at the back, the defensive record paints a clear picture. Newport rank bottom of League Two for goals conceded per match, averaging 1.7, significantly higher than promotion-chasing sides like the Dons and Bradford City.

Head coach Jardim did not hold back when analysing the shortcomings and their impact on results.

“There have been a lot of highs and lows. The lows have been connected to injuries, sendings off and changes [to the team]. It makes it difficult when you cannot settle at the back. Defensively, I never felt we were strong enough. We know how defending well and conceding few goals helps, that’s why Bradford and Wimbledon are up there.”

Goalkeeper Nick Townsend’s workload further highlights the issues, with the shot-stopper making the most saves across the entire division.

Set-piece frailty has also plagued County, typified by last weekend’s late blow against Colchester United when Fiacre Kelleher headed home an 89th-minute equaliser after a lapse in concentration.

Jardim was candid about the need for accountability within his squad, though he accepted ultimate responsibility for the lapse.

With clear plans for defensive reinforcement, the summer promises to be a pivotal one for the Welsh club as they seek greater stability in the 2025/26 campaign.

Writer’s view

Newport’s defensive struggles have undoubtedly stunted their potential this season. While survival would be a positive outcome given the pre-season expectations, Jardim’s insistence on strengthening the spine of his team is both timely and necessary. If the right players are brought in over the summer, County could well be pushing for a top-half finish rather than simply fighting for safety next year.
