With an outside chance of securing automatic promotion, Charlton Athletic will go all out for a win in this League One encounter. Visiting side Northampton Town are looking over their shoulder at the wrong end of the table, and are also in need of points, making this a potentially exciting game.
Our Three Predictions For Charlton Athletic v Northampton Town
- Prediction 1 – Charlton Athletic To Win – 53/100
- Prediction 2 – Over 2.5 Goals Score – 17/20
- Prediction 3 – Both Teams To Score – Yes – 83/100
First Prediction For Charlton Athletic v Northampton Town – Charlton Athletic To Win – 53/100
The business end of the season and Charlton Athletic are still very much in the thick of the promotion fight. They will need help from others if they are to make a surprise late run for automatic promotion, but their current form does suggest they could do that. With the fifth best home record in the division they will be confident in this match, even more so a positive result as they have only lost twice on home turf all season. Despite their low position in the table, Northampton Town do have a devent away record, picking up 23 points form 21 outings, and have not lost in their last four road games. This though will be The Addicks day as they will want to keep the pressure on the teams above them, and keep momentum if indeed their fate is the playoffs.
Second Prediction For Charlton Athletic v Northampton Town – Over 2.5 Goals Scored – 17/20
Charlton score for fun at home, having racked up 33 goals in 21 games, and of late they are very free flowing. In the last six games at The Valley they have scored an impressive 14 times. Their appetite for keeping up with the top three teams has kept them focused in front of goal, but they are prone to lapses, a recent 4-0 reverse at Peterborough United shows that. This will give Northampton some hope that they can also penetrate a usually tight back line, especially at home where they have only conceded 14. Town average just over a goal a game away, and exactly one goal per game overall. With what is at stake, and scoring 10 goals in their last six away days, this could be a free flowing game with lots of chances, with a few being converted.
Third Prediction For Charlton Athletic v Northampton Town – Both Teams To Score – Yes – 83/100
It is hard to see both teams not getting on the scoresheet in this game. Both sides do not have any trouble finding the net, and likewise, do have trouble keeping opposition out. Especially in the case of The Cobblers, and hence their lowly position in League One. On the road they have conceded 30 of their 59 overall. Charlton have let in just 14 at home, so it might be harder for the Northampton strike force to grab goal, but overall the promotion chasing team have let in 38, so there is every chance that Town will grab at least one goal in what looks like quite an open game.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head To Head
A run of four unbeaten has kept Charlton Athletics’ hopes of automatic promotion alive, but realistically they do look to be playoff bound, which is still a very good season. Nathan Jones is no stranger in getting teams promoted in the EFL and this could well be another one where he runs the table at the end of the season to get a team promoted. Momentum is key at this stage and scoring goals seems to be the way forward, as the defence has had some issues recently. Matty Gooden leads the way with 14 strikes, and he has good support from Tyreece Campbell and Luke Berry, with the pair scoring 12 between them. Berry also has five assists to his name, so his attacking play will be needed in the home straight. Macauley Gillesphy has only missed one game all season and is the rock in defence, managing to add five goals and the same number of assists, keeping the 29 year old fit for the remainder will be crucial.
Northampton Town are just five points above the drop zone and will not want any late season collapse. This game couldn’t have come at a worse time in terms of opponent, but they will take heart that their away form has yielded 11 points form a possible 15 in the last five trips. Kevin Nolan will have to pull out a masterstroke in tactics to claim anything from this game, but do not count them out of doing so. His side can be very entertaining going forward and if Cameron McGeehan can add to his nine goals and five assists in this game, and beyond they have every chance of keeping themselves above the drop zone line. In midfield Mitch Pinnock is also key with his six assists he can unlock defences and change games, and hasn’t missed a game all season. At the back it has been hard keeping a consistent line, and the makeshift line will need Timothy Eyoma at his best.
