Gillingham Boss Hails 31-Year-Old As Injury Comeback Continues

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has praised midfielder Bradley Dack‘s intelligence and experience while expressing empathy for the injury troubles that have disrupted his career in recent years.

Dack, who rejoined the Gills earlier this season, scored his first goal for the club since 2017 during their 1-0 win over MK Dons on Saturday – a key result in their late push for League Two play-off contention.

Experienced Head, Intelligent Play

Ainsworth, speaking after the match, revealed his admiration for the 30-year-old’s game awareness and positional play – traits he says cannot be taught, only learned through years on the pitch.

“Bradley’s an experienced player, I knew he’d be football savvy… It’s experience, it’s playing. You see sometimes when the ball’s coming up, he’s giving little nudges to people just to make space for himself. And he knows his next pass.”

The Gills boss, whose own career was marred by injuries during spells at QPR and Wycombe, admitted he could relate closely to Dack’s frustration at missing so much time due to setbacks. He described Dack’s recent milestone as a rewarding moment for both the player and the club.

Dack’s goal came after a well-worked set-piece routine that involved a lengthy on-pitch discussion between the midfielder and teammates Armani Little, Max Clark, and Conor Masterson. Despite initially expecting Dack to take the free-kick, Ainsworth was happy to be proved wrong.

“I have to hold my hand up here. I said I wouldn’t mind Bradley taking this… But Bradley’s there. He knows where the goal is and that’s a really important position. Right place, right time, Brad. Well done.”

The Gills manager highlighted Dack’s ability to drift into dangerous areas – particularly at the far post – as evidence of a player who has “played the game and knows the game.”

While Dack has battled through a tough few seasons with injuries, Ainsworth believes moments like Saturday’s match-winner prove the midfielder still has plenty to offer.

Writer’s View

Dack’s return to the scoresheet is a heartening moment for Gillingham supporters and a reminder of the midfielder’s enduring class. Ainsworth’s faith in his experience and footballing IQ appears well placed. If he can stay fit, Dack could become a pivotal figure in the closing weeks of the campaign – especially in high-stakes situations where know-how and instinct can make the difference.
