MK Dons’ search for a new manager continues after top candidate Paul Warne has decided against taking the role at Stadium MK, according to an MK Citizen report.
The club have been looking for the man to replace Scott Lindsey who was sacked early in March.
Warne Meets Owners
The report suggests that Warne has been meeting with club owner Fahad Al Ghanim this week but has since decided against replacing Lindsey in the MK dugout.
Warne, 51, was believed to have been the front-runner for the role after leaving Derby County in February.
Why Paul Warne?
Warne has a track record packed with promotions. During seven seasons, Warne achieved four promotions from League One to the Championship.
He would leave the Millers early in the 2022/23 season and drop from the Championship to League One side Derby.
After missing out on the playoffs in that season, Warne would achieve yet another promotion from the third tier in his first full season in charge as the Rams finished second behind Portsmouth.
Derby found life in the Championship to be challenging and Warne was relieved of his duties in February.
As things stand, he has taken charge of 210 League One matches, winning 114 and claiming 1.85 points per game.
Back To The Drawing Board For MK
Warne is not believed to be the only candidate to have withdrawn from the race to take over in the MK dugout. Former Milton Keynes midfielder Keith Andrews is said to have turned down the opportunity to return to his former club.
The former Republic of Ireland international was part of the side that won the League Two title in 2008 but has reportedly decided to stay in his current role as set-piece coach at Brentford.
Writer’s View
It is not a surprise to see Paul Warne turn this job down as, after leaving a Championship club and having such a good League One record, he is surely not ready to drop to the lower regions of League Two and will expect to pick up a third tier job early next season.
