Boston United boss Graham Coughlan has urged his players to stay focused after the in-form Pilgrims pulled five points clear of the relegation zone with a crucial 1-0 win over Altrincham at the Jakemans Community Stadium.
Frankie Maguire’s 26th-minute strike, following excellent work from Jacob Hazel, proved decisive in a tense encounter that has breathed new life into Boston’s battle for National League survival. Just weeks ago, the club were staring at the drop — 12 points adrift and seemingly out of answers. Now, with only two defeats in their last 12 matches, safety is suddenly within reach.
Resurgence Underway, But Work Still to Do
Saturday’s hard-fought win sees Boston open a five-point cushion above the drop zone, ahead of their next test at home to fellow strugglers Wealdstone. However, Coughlan insists the job is far from done.
“It is up to the lads to keep driving the standards and the culture,” said Coughlan. “They have got to keep pushing. They are a great bunch of lads who work really hard and are honest… The position they were in really hurt them because they are genuine people. We have to keep pushing.”
Boston’s display against Altrincham was gritty and determined. After a bright start from the visitors, Regan Linney hit the post and Cameron Gregory was called into action to deny Elliot Kosylo. But the Pilgrims responded well, with Connor Teale and Jai Rowe both going close before Maguire broke the deadlock.
Chances were scarce in the second half, although Altrincham substitute James Jones squandered a golden opportunity to level from 12 yards. Boston weathered the late pressure to see out the win and edge closer to survival.
The result follows a midweek win over Aldershot, with Coughlan keeping faith in an unchanged side. The team’s togetherness and work ethic have been hallmarks of their revival — something the manager is determined to maintain as they enter the final four matches.

Writer’s view
Few would have predicted Boston United’s resurgence when they were floundering near the bottom and cut adrift just a month ago. But Graham Coughlan has instilled grit, belief and a solid structure. Saturday’s victory wasn’t pretty, but it was perfectly timed. If they can maintain this level of discipline and unity, Boston are on course for one of the season’s great escapes.
