Birmingham City are in advanced discussions as they begin preparations for life in the Championship, with Peterborough United’s Kwame Poku emerging as a priority summer transfer target.
Chris Davies’ side sealed promotion from League One following a 2-1 win over Peterborough United on Tuesday night, with winger Poku getting on the scoresheet for the hosts in a spirited display. However, the 23-year-old’s future may lie away from the Weston Homes Stadium, with several clubs now in pursuit.
Valued at around £1.5 million, Poku’s representatives are chatting to a number of potential suitors. The Blues, already planning for a return to the second tier, have reportedly identified the Ghana international as a key target for their revamped squad.
“His people are in talks with a number of clubs – and yes, one of them is Birmingham. There are others, though – Crystal Palace, Millwall, Luton and Norwich among them,” said TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey. “However, the big danger is Rangers – they want him and have watched him numerous times.”
Poku is out of contract this summer. However, given his age, Peterborough are still due compensation should he leave. The amount received depends heavily on whether he stays within the English Football League system or moves abroad. A cross-border transfer to Rangers, for example, would result in only a nominal fee, much to Peterborough’s frustration.
Posh chairman Barry Fry added fuel to the speculation when he told ITV before Tuesday’s game that Birmingham were interested in one of his players, suggesting a deal may already be in motion. Poku’s celebration after scoring—pointing to his name in front of the away end—has also been viewed by many as a subtle message to Birmingham fans.
Kwame Poku Career
Poku joined Worthing from Cray Wanderers in February 2019 and soon moved to Colchester United after a successful trial. He made his professional debut in September 2019 and scored his first goal later that month. Poku signed a new deal with Colchester in December 2019.
In August 2021, he joined Peterborough United, scoring his first goal in October 2022. His standout performances earned him EFL League One Player of the Month in both September and October 2024.

Writer’s view
Kwame Poku is a player who’s long stood out in League One, and it’s no surprise to see Birmingham at the front of the queue. His creativity and work rate fit the profile of what Chris Davies is building. However, Rangers’ involvement complicates matters, especially from a financial perspective for Peterborough. If Poku fancies European football and a title challenge, Birmingham may need more than just cash to convince him.
