Colchester United Striker Sends Strong Play-Off Message

Colchester United forward Tyreece Simpson has urged every member of the squad to be ready to contribute as the U’s continue their late push for a League Two play-off place.

Simpson, who scored the decisive goal in last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Notts County, says the spirit within the squad has been vital as they’ve battled illness, injuries, and pressure — and believes unity will be key in the final five games.

“Everyone has to step up” says Simpson

Speaking after the hard-fought win at the JobServe Community Stadium, Simpson reflected on the challenges the team has faced and praised those who have been called upon to perform in unfamiliar roles.

“It was difficult, they’re a very good side,” he said. “It was a good three points that we needed. Five more games to go, keep picking up the results and see where it takes us.

“We’ve had illness, injuries, but anyone that has been called upon has stepped up. Jack Tucker last week came and played in midfield — he stepped up and performed well. Lyle [Taylor] today, unreal performance, he hasn’t been too well. I like playing with Lyle, he’s always looking to find me.”

With the U’s now just three points outside the play-off places, Saturday’s trip to Newport County represents another opportunity to build momentum. “It’s a great feeling,” Simpson added. “Everyone has got to step up and play their part when they’re called upon.”

Cowley praises character amid testing times

Head coach Danny Cowley praised the resilience of his players after they followed up a midweek draw at Gillingham with victory over the Magpies, despite a virus that has plagued the squad in recent weeks.

“A lot of the boys played knowing they weren’t quite where they wanted to be, and that’s not easy for a professional footballer. To a man they were exceptional,” Cowley said.

“Sometimes it’s hard to convey how difficult the last two weeks have been. It’s been such a tough virus, it’s really hurting the boys.”

“The people of Colchester will know they’ve got a team really fighting for them,” said Cowley. “For us to come out of that period and pick up four points is credit to the spirit.”

Cowley also highlighted the tactical maturity shown against a possession-heavy Notts County side, with the U’s managing difficult pitch conditions and adapting well.

Writer’s view

Colchester’s fight is very much alive — both literally and figuratively. Illness-hit but undeterred, Cowley’s men are showing the resilience of a squad that believes in a late surge. With key players stepping up in unexpected roles and fixtures tightening, their trip to Newport could be a defining moment in their play-off pursuit.
