Wrexham striker Jay Rodriguez could be fit in time for this weekend’s crucial promotion clash with Wigan Athletic after scans revealed his calf injury is only minor.
The 35-year-old frontman, who joined from Burnley in January, limped off during the first half of Saturday’s 3-0 win over Burton Albion, sparking concern among supporters. However, boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed that the issue is not serious and Rodriguez remains in contention for Saturday’s fixture at The Brick Community Stadium.
Light Injury List – but Illness an Issue
Rodriguez has scored twice for the Red Dragons since his arrival and offers valuable experience in Wrexham’s bid for a third successive promotion. Parkinson remains hopeful of including him in the travelling squad but hinted he’ll be cautious with his recovery during training this week.
“Jay had a bit of a tight calf but nothing too serious. We got him scanned straight away on Sunday and it’s only very minor. We will just keep monitoring him as the week progresses.” – Phil Parkinson
Rodriguez was replaced by veteran striker Steven Fletcher against Burton, and the 36-year-old wasted no time making an impact — converting a 71st-minute penalty. Fellow substitute Jack Marriott also found the net, bolstering Wrexham’s attacking options if Rodriguez does not recover in time.
Parkinson still has an array of firepower to choose from, with Sam Smith, Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Mo Faal all available for the weekend. The manager made it clear that every player in the squad must be ready to step in as the League One promotion race intensifies.

George Dobson Update
There was also an update on George Dobson, who suffered a shin injury following a reckless early challenge by Burton’s Charlie Webster, who was sent off after just 10 minutes. Dobson played on before being withdrawn at the break.
“Dobbo has had stitches in his shin but he won’t be training the early part of this week,” said Parkinson. “We could have stitched him up at half-time and he stayed on, he wasn’t that bad, but we were making changes anyway and with Dobbo having blood coming out of his shin, it was the right choice to bring him off.”
Parkinson also confirmed a handful of players have been battling illness, including striker Sam Smith, but expects most to be available for selection.
Writer’s View
Wrexham’s squad depth continues to prove invaluable as they chase another historic promotion. The early signs on Rodriguez and Dobson are encouraging, while the form of Fletcher and Marriott offers reassurance. If the Red Dragons can maintain momentum and manage the squad wisely during this period, they have every reason to believe the Championship dream is within reach.
