Hull City Respond to Transfer Talk as Rivals Eye Key Midfielder

Hull City boss Ruben Selles has addressed speculation linking Regan Slater with moves to Championship rivals Derby County and Stoke City, insisting the midfielder remains a valued part of the Tigers squad.

Slater, 25, has attracted interest ahead of the summer transfer window, with both clubs believed to be monitoring his situation closely. The former Sheffield United man has been a consistent performer since arriving at the MKM Stadium in 2022 and is under contract until 2025, with a club option to extend for another year.

After missing his first game of the season against Luton Town, Slater returned to the starting XI in Saturday’s dramatic win over Sheffield Wednesday, a result that lifted Hull’s survival hopes.

Selles praises Slater’s professionalism

Despite rumours surrounding his future, Selles was quick to play down any uncertainty regarding the midfielder’s commitment or status within the team.

“He’s a player that is always difficult to keep on the bench, but honest and deliver always one hundred per cent. I’m not surprised by the speculation because he’s a good player for the level, and we are lucky to have him with us here, so that’s as much as I can say,” said Selles.

City paid £50,000 to secure Slater’s services after an impressive loan from the Blades, making him the first permanent signing of Acun Ilicali’s ownership era. His consistent displays and versatility in midfield have made him a fan favourite, even during a testing season in which Hull have battled relegation.

While Selles admits he hadn’t been aware of the interest before the weekend, the club are reportedly aware that informal interest could become more serious during the upcoming window.

Stoke are believed to have shown interest in Slater last summer, and Derby’s current position in the table makes him an appealing target should they remain in the second tier.

Writer’s view

Regan Slater’s situation is one to watch. While Hull City appear firm on keeping him, interest from ambitious rivals could test their resolve. Given his leadership, work rate and strong local ties, it’s easy to see why clubs are circling. But unless a significant offer arrives, it’s hard to see Hull parting ways with one of their most reliable players at such a crucial juncture.
