Bolton Wanderers Boss Issues Bold Verdict Ahead of Huge Clash

Steven Schumacher says his Bolton Wanderers squad are fully equipped to handle the pressure as they prepare to face Rotherham United tonight in a key fixture in the League One play-off race.

The Trotters were comfortably beaten by the Millers back in January in what proved to be one of Ian Evatt’s final games in charge. But since Schumacher’s arrival, Bolton have taken 28 points from 14 matches and climbed firmly back into the top six.

Schumacher praises mentality of his squad

While the earlier season defeat to Rotherham had sparked doubts over Bolton’s promotion credentials, Schumacher believes the group has responded superbly and remains convinced of their mental strength.

“Since the day we walked in, everybody has been really receptive to what we’ve asked them to do. Their attitude has been class. The energy that they’ve played with on the pitch – everyone can see they’re giving their all.”

Although the former Stoke boss admits there have been errors, he feels the foundation of character and unity within the dressing room has been vital in their resurgence.

“Yes, we’ve lacked a bit of quality and made mistakes, but that’s football. From a mentality and attitude point of view, I’ve got no questions about them.”

Schumacher’s start to the campaign came with Stoke City in the Championship, but he left the club in September after just five games. Now at Bolton, he says he’s enjoying his time more than ever.

“This is a different environment – there’s more energy about it. The lads are hungry. I can see they want to do well and achieve promotion,” he said.

While Rotherham are now out of the running at both ends of the table, Schumacher remains wary of underestimating them, particularly after their recent upturn under interim boss Matt Hamshaw.

“You’re always playing for something – for your contract, for the manager. No one will turn up and not try. That’s not how modern-day professionals operate.”

Writer’s view

Schumacher has re-energised Bolton at just the right time. His calm, positive approach has clearly resonated with the squad, and the numbers speak for themselves. The contrast to the reverse fixture against Rotherham is stark. If Wanderers can maintain this momentum and belief, they could finally deliver the promotion that’s eluded them in recent seasons.
