Lincoln City Eyeing Swoop For Premier League Prospect

Lincoln City are plotting a deal to bring Nottingham Forest’s Joe Gardner back to the LNER Stadium next season, as they look to continue their reputation for developing Premier League talent in League One.

The 19-year-old midfielder joined the Imps on loan in January but has endured a mixed spell so far, with injuries and suspension hampering his rhythm.

Despite the slow start, Alan Nixon reports that head coach Michael Skubala has seen enough potential to make Gardner’s return a summer priority.

Slow start, but signs of promise

Gardner’s debut was cut short after just four minutes due to a straight red card against Cambridge United. Lincoln appealed the decision, but the EFL upheld the ban, ruling him out for the following three matches.

Since returning, Gardner has been eased back into the side. Used mainly as an impact substitute as he regains full fitness, he made his first start in the 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town. He bagged his first Imps goal as they cruised to a 4-1 victory against Crawley Town, and has excited fans during his brief cameos.

Although he was an unused substitute against Charlton Athletic, the coaching staff remain confident that the talented playmaker can grow with time and become a key figure if given a full season in League One.

Reputation

City has built a strong reputation for nurturing young players on loan, with names like Morgan Rogers and Brennan Johnson making headlines after their time at the club. The likes of Alex Palmer, Morgan Whittaker, and Brooke Norton-Cuffy have also benefited from their stints at Sincil Bank before progressing in their careers.

After an uneven 2024/25 campaign, Lincoln currently sit comfortably mid-table following a stabilising January window which included the additions of James Collins, Sam Clucas, and Gardner himself. While their play-off push fell short last season, fans will be hoping the club can build momentum going into 2025/26.

Writer’s view

Gardner’s short spell at Lincoln hasn’t quite sparked yet, but that doesn’t mean the potential isn’t there. His raw technical ability is evident, and a pre-season under Skubala could be exactly what’s needed. If he returns next season and hits the ground running, the move could become a defining one in his development. Given Lincoln’s proven track record with loanees, this could be a win for all sides—especially if they push further up the table in a more open League One.
