Lincoln City manager Michael Skubala has sounded a stark warning to his players as they prepare for a testing trip to promotion-chasing Charlton Athletic this weekend.
With only six matches left of the League One season, Charlton sit comfortably in fourth place and are eyeing a play-off berth. Nathan Jones’ side boast the best home form in the division, having only suffered two defeats at The Valley all campaign.
The Imps, in contrast, find themselves 12th in the table after narrowly missing out on the top six last season. Skubala’s men have managed just five victories on the road this term, and the upcoming trip to south-east London looks to be among their toughest remaining fixtures.
“They bully you with the ball” – Skubala outlines the challenge
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Skubala underlined the scale of the task facing his team and acknowledged the physical and tactical strength of their opponents.
“We probably haven’t done well enough away from home this season. It’s one of those challenges against big teams this season with huge stadiums where we drew when we should have won. It’s always a challenge to go away from home and it’s going to be a huge challenge at Charlton.
“They have an immense home record – they’re really strong. They have the best home form. They look like the team who are chasing [for the automatics]. They are getting wins over the line. We are going to have to be on it or we’re going to get hurt.
“We have to start fast and stand up to what they do. Nathan knows how he wants to play at this level. They’re very powerful and very good at landing on second balls. They bully you with the ball and make you defend a lot.”
Jones has revitalised Charlton since taking over, instilling an aggressive style of play that has seen them rise steadily up the table. Their ability to dominate possession and control games at home has made them a formidable force.
For Lincoln, the trip offers not only a test of resilience but a chance to prove they can still compete with the division’s elite, even as a top-six finish now looks unlikely.
Writer’s view
This weekend’s fixture at The Valley will provide a clear measure of Lincoln’s mental and physical resolve. While the Imps may be out of the promotion conversation, a spirited performance could offer momentum heading into the close season. Skubala’s comments suggest a respect for Charlton’s power and precision — but also an undercurrent of intent. If Lincoln can stand firm early on, they might just cause a stir.
