Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has assured supporters that his team will continue their push for a League Two play-off spot, despite facing a crippling injury and illness crisis that has left them without several key players.
Injury and Illness Woes Cannot Stop Colchester’s Push
The U’s were forced to field a depleted side during Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Gillingham, with multiple players sidelined due to a virus that has swept through the squad. Colchester were already without top scorer Lyle Taylor and several others due to the illness, but things worsened when Jack Payne and Owura Edwards were forced off with injuries in the first half.
Despite the setbacks, Cowley is determined that his team will fight until the final whistle in their quest to close a three-point gap to the play-off places with just six games left to play.
“We need them to come over the hill and we want to finish this season strong,” Cowley said. “We’re going to give this everything we’ve got. No matter what goes against us, we’re not giving up – we’re going to go right to the end and see where that takes us.”
In a display of determination, Cowley praised his team’s resilience, particularly in light of the adversity they have faced. “I can’t remember being prouder of the team,” he added. “The boys have been brilliant with everything against us.”
The manager also highlighted the efforts of Jack Tucker, who played out of position and provided a monumental contribution during the Gillingham game. “He was everywhere, headed everything, kicked everything, made the first pass,” Cowley said. “It was a huge effort from him.”
A gastro illness has hit the squad, more severe than Covid, leaving players with fever, headaches, and flu-like symptoms. Cowley praised the return of Ellis Iandolo, who had been laid up with the illness but still managed to feature in the match against Gillingham.
Despite the ongoing injury crisis, Cowley is hopeful that the injuries to Payne and Edwards will settle soon, with both players to be assessed ahead of the weekend’s home clash with Notts County. “We’re hopeful that it will settle down,” said Cowley regarding the duo’s injuries.
