Colchester United manager Danny Cowley is confident that the “togetherness and spirit” within his squad will help them get their League Two play-off bid back on track as they head into their next fixture against Gillingham on Tuesday night.
The U’s have slipped to back-to-back defeats, leaving them four points off the top seven with just seven games remaining. Despite these setbacks, Cowley is urging his players to maintain their unity and fight for a return to winning ways. The last time Colchester lost two games in a row, they responded with a 13-match unbeaten run, and the boss is hoping for a similar revival.
Fighting Spirit Key for Colchester’s Play-Off Hopes
“We’ve had two disappointments back to back,” Cowley said. “When we went 11 games unbeaten, we had two disappointments and put 13 games together. We have seven games left, and we haven’t come this far to only come this far. Everybody associated with Colchester will be bitterly disappointed after the Grimsby defeat, but we have to stick together like we’ve done very, very well.”
Cowley stressed the importance of unity, stating that the spirit within the squad will be essential in bouncing back. “We’ve already won together and lost together, and that has been a big part of our success,” Cowley explained. “I’ve told the boys to demand more of themselves and each other but also to make sure that they care for one another as well.”
“The togetherness and spirit will be the bit that will allow us to dust ourselves down and get in a good position to beat Gillingham on Tuesday,” Cowley added.
Colchester will face a Gillingham side who are struggling in 19th place in League Two, but Cowley is under no illusion about the challenge ahead. The U’s boss knows that with so much at stake, there are no easy games in the division.

Writer’s View
Colchester United’s play-off hopes remain very much alive, but Cowley’s leadership will be crucial in the final stretch of the season. The team has shown resilience in the past, and with the spirit Cowley is instilling, they will need to dig deep against Gillingham. While their form has dipped recently, the belief is there, and if they can rediscover their best, a strong finish is still possible.
