Premier League duo Leicester City and Southampton are both keen on bringing in former Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior, according to reports from France.
The 40-year-old left the MKM Stadium at the end of last season after missing out on a place in the Championship play-offs. Despite that, his dismissal came as a huge shock, with Rosenior widely praised for his work during his tenure.
It’s a decision which Hull have come to regret. With Premier League still the ultimate aim, the Tigers have spent much of the campaign battling relegation and a drop into League One. Meanwhile, their former boss was snapped up by Ligue 1 outfit RC Strasbourg.
Rosenior has performed wonders in France and currently has the Alsace-based team on the brink of the European places. Sitting in seventh, they are also just four points off the top three, who qualify for the Champions League.
Rosenior Attracting Attention From England
With the former Fulham and Hull defender’s stock continuing to rise, it’s no surprise to hear that he is being watched by clubs back at home. According to L’Equipe, both Southampton and Leicester City are amongst his admirers, with both expected to make managerial changes in the summer.
It’s been widely reported that current manager Ivan Juric will depart St Mary’s at the end of the season. The ex-Roma boss has been unable to halt their freefall and they currently sit bottom of the Premier League with just nine points. As such, they will return to the Championship next season at the first time of asking.
They are likely to be joined by Leicester, who were crowned champions of the second tier last May. They too have struggled and and opted to replace Steve Cooper with Ruud van Nistelrooy in December. However, the Foxes are nine points from safety.
Rosenior is said to be on the shortlist of both teams, although it is also claimed that neither team ‘pose an immediate threat’ due to their imminent relegations. Southampton are likely to make a move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl.
Writer’s View
Almost a year down the line, Hull’s decision to axe Liam Rosenior is still a perplexing one. They had one of the brightest young coaches in the English game at their disposal and have suffered as a result of that decision. As for their former boss, he has gone from strength to strength and guiding Strasbourg into Europe would be a phenomenal achievement. A top half finish for only the second time since their promotion from Ligue 2 in 2017 is the minimum they can expect. It’s no surprise to see Leicester and Southampton interested, but it would be a surprise to see him return to the Championship.
