Swansea City have confirmed that caretaker boss Alan Sheehan will remain in charge until the end of the 2024-25 season, following a steady interim spell since the departure of Luke Williams.
Sheehan, who also briefly led the Swans last term, has collected 18 points from 12 matches in charge this time around. Since stepping in last month, he has overseen five games, gaining seven points including notable wins against Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough.
Coaching Team Reshaped
To support Sheehan during the final weeks of the campaign, Swansea have appointed Mark Fotheringham and Richard Stearman to the first-team coaching staff. They join existing coaches Kris O’Leary and Martyn Margetson, while Anthony Wright returns to his role with the under-21s after a recent spell assisting the senior side.
“We’re delighted Alan has agreed to lead the team for the rest of the season, and would like to extend a big welcome to Mark and Richard as they join our coaching staff in support of Alan. Both will aid us in our efforts to finish the season as strongly as possible, which is the full focus of everyone at the club at this moment.”
Fotheringham, a former Celtic midfielder, brings a diverse coaching background. After a career that spanned clubs in the UK and Europe, he moved into coaching with stints in Germany and more recently with the South Korea national team under Jurgen Klinsmann. He also previously managed Huddersfield Town in the Championship.
Stearman’s addition sees Sheehan reunited with a familiar face from their early days at Leicester City. A veteran of nearly 500 league appearances—including 77 in the Premier League—Stearman transitions from his most recent role as assistant manager at Solihull Moors.
The new-look coaching team faces an immediate test with a trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United after the international break, before welcoming Derby County and Plymouth Argyle to the Swansea.com Stadium in back-to-back home games.
Writer’s View
Swansea’s decision to stick with Sheehan reflects a desire for stability during a turbulent season. His results have been respectable, and the addition of experienced coaching figures in Fotheringham and Stearman gives the backroom team a fresh feel. If Sheehan can continue to motivate his side, a strong finish isn’t out of reach—particularly with several home fixtures on the horizon.
